The Supplicatory Canon to Sts. Cosmas and Damian (English)

Saints Cosmas and Damian were brothers by birth and studied medicine as a career. When they began their profession, they healed people in the name of God and did not accept money for their healing, thus earning themselves the name Unmercenaries. The two brothers rose to such fame that the governor had them arrested, but then let them free after he himself became ill and was healed by the saints. The brothers' former teacher and trainer was soon filled with such jealousy and hatred for their success that he sent them into the deep forest where he asked them to find some herbs for medicine, and there he had them murdered. The saints continue to this day to provide healing for those who call upon their name.
